Ingredient Feature: Glycerin

Vegetable Glycerin is an important ingredient in the personal care industry that we use in quite a few products!
WHAT is GLYCERIN?
Glycerin, also known as glycerol, is a natural compound derived from vegetable oils or animal fats. It is made by heating triglyceride-rich vegetable fats into a color-less, odor-less viscous (syrupy) liquid.
WHAT does it do?
Glycerin is a humectant and also a natural emulsifier.
Humectant: Glycerin attracts any existing water or moisture, drawing it to the outer layers of the skin. Allowing for moisture and water retention. Glycerin also forms a very light barrier in this way, and has been consider a skin protectant - helping to heal scrapes and burns. Vegetable glycerin does not block pores.
Emulsifier: As waters and oils don't dissolve into each other readily (if ever!), an emulsifier will help these two ingredients bind together to a better degree than not using them. This is why many natural products require you to shake the bottle consistently.
Why the Glycerin CONTROVERSY?
Vegetable glycerin is mainly sourced from 3 different vegetable oils: palm oil, soybean oil, coconut oil. Yes, PALM OIL - and there lies the controversy. Palm oil has been over harvested resulting in rapid deforestation affecting both our planet and animal habitats.
"As one of the primary drivers of deforestation in Sumatra, the palm oil industry poses a serious threat to the survival of orangutans, as well as countless other endemic and critically endangered species including the Sumatran tiger, Sumatran rhinoceros and Sumatran elephant, that share the same rainforest habitat," Sumatran Organutan Society - read more here
What about DEMES products and GLYCERIN?
We use certified organic vegetable glycerin derived from soy. This is USP Grade, Kosher, and GMO and allergen-free.
DEMES Products with GLYCERIN
Hand Soap | Savon Mains - glycerin is used to leave soft, moisturized hands after washing. This helps for frequent hand washing.
Get the Funk Out Deodorant / Deodorizer - with drying ingredients like pure alcohol and witch hazel, glycerin acts as a moisturizing agent. It also helps bind pure essential oils with the alcohol and waters used.
Get the Funk Out Hand Sanitizer - ^^ same :)
Gentle Toner - glycerin is the humectant and emulsifier giving this toner extra moisturizing effect. It acts to form a thin barrier to keep the hydrosols (within the toner) within the top layers of the skin.
